How to use the interactive gallery on the category page?

AI generates photos. Magento can sell them.

Sometimes the best ideas for module development don't come from sitting at a desk, but from talking to customers.

Recently, a sportswear company contacted me. They were looking for a solution that would allow them to show more than just a standard product photo in the category list. It wasn't about another shot of a sweatshirt on a white background. It was about something completely different.

And then the word came up: AI.

Generating product photos with models – without a photo shoot

Today, thanks to AI-based tools, you can generate realistic photos of:

  • models wearing your clothes,
  • in various settings (gym, mountains, city),
  • in various poses and shots,
  • without an expensive photo shoot.

This is a huge change for sportswear manufacturers. One catalog photo is no longer enough. You can show the product "in motion," in context, in style.

The only question is: where to show it?

Problem: The category page in Magento shows only one photo

By default, Magento 2 displays one photo in the product list. The customer sees a thumbnail and has to enter the product card to see more.

This means:

  • less excitement when browsing categories,
  • less context,
  • less "story" around the product,
  • more clicks needed to make a decision.

In the case of lifestyle, fashion, or sports products, this is a real loss of sales potential.

Solution: Interactive photo gallery on the category page

This is exactly where the module comes in handy:

The module allows you to display more than one product photo without having to enter the product card. Possible scenarios:

  • changing the photo when hovering the cursor,
  • mini photo slider within the product tile,
  • presentation of various arrangements (e.g., gym / outdoors / detail),
  • showing different colors or styling options.

In the context of AI-generated photos, this opens up completely new possibilities.

Examples of applications (not only clothing)

The conversation with the customer opened up an interesting direction. But this solution has a much wider application:

1. Sports and fashion clothing

  • product on a model,
  • close-up of details,
  • photo in motion,
  • AI-generated styling visualization.

2. Furniture and interior design

  • product on a white background,
  • in a living room arrangement,
  • in several color variants,
  • in a set with other products.

3. Premium products

  • packshot photo,
  • material detail,
  • close-up of the logo,
  • stylized marketing visualization.

4. Beauty industry

  • product packaging,
  • before and after effect,
  • use in context (e.g., bathroom, dressing table),
  • photos generated based on the brand's mood board.

Why does this make business sense?

The category page is where the customer makes their first decision: "I'm going for this product" or "I'm scrolling on."

If you show the following at the product list stage:

  • more context,
  • more emotion,
  • more details,

you increase the chance of a click and thus a sale.

AI generates images. Magento must be able to display them well. The technology of generating photos is only half the battle. The other half is presenting them properly.

Conclusions

More and more often, it's not about whether we can generate attractive photos. We can already do that.

The real question is: can our store use them?

If you are developing your brand, investing in visual content, and want to stand out in your category, an interactive photo gallery is a natural step.

Not as a "wow" effect for its own sake. But as a tool that helps customers make decisions faster.
